Fashion Architecture Taste (FAT)

What does it mean to be an emerging design professional in a global culture? From this project and the works of others (a-f) it is clear that architecture/design can be about attitude rather than style. The embodied playfulness is evident in both process and built reality; affording a level of transferability that is inclusive and malleable while retaining a certain edgy quality. The emerging design work from these offices evolves the spirit of modernism and is unapologetically thoughtful.

All You Can Eat: A Buffet of Architectural Ideas for Cleveland

What is Cleveland’s recommended daily intake of architecture?

All You Can Eat posits that Cleveland is of a high metabolic rate, that it burns through ideas faster than they can be generated. In response, All You Can Eat presents a binge of possible futures excessive in scale and exhaustive in scope, ideas both raw and cooked, half-baked and hair-brained. All You Can Eat is a an event/exhibition to be held at The Sculpture Center in Fall 2009. A formal announcement and call for entries is forthcoming.

“Would you choose between parking and public space?” is an appropriate statement by the architect for this transitional project. Both Art and Architecture, this design attempts to function as icon, bus stop and venue for a small “street village” in Lower Austria. Here, the existing village square and car park act as the framework for spatial play that allows visitors to participate in daily (re)configuration.

The Fiat Works is a monument to innovation and efficiency while serving as the first large scale application of reinforced concrete framing in architecture (a). The production line winds up the building to the roof where cars are tested (b) and then re-circulated back down another ramp to the showroom on the ground floor. The plant closed in the 1980’s and as a result of its architectural and social significance Renzo Piano was chosen to restore the building as a cultural center and icon of Torino (c).

The developments in screen printing on glass are invaluable to the New Ornamentation/Skin dialogue in design. It can act to signify/project imagery (a,b) as an extension of its context (c) or support the appearance of solidity (d). In the University of Utrecht Library, screen printing allows views out while protecting it’s holdings through the filtration of light across multuple densities and glass types.

This building toys with the typological conventions of residential dwelling (a) while exploring the desire for a tenant controlled (vs. architect designed) relationship to the exterior environment (b) through the use of a unifying skin (c). This gesture could be seen as a type of organic ornamentation (d), where the skin (as controlled by inhabitants) actively responds to varying external conditions. Lets just hope laziness doesn’t void this stong idea of its playful quality.
